THE standards of year 12 curriculums nationwide will be investigated under a study to be commissioned by the Federal Government.

The teaching of English, literature, mathematics, physics and chemistry will be analysed in the study, announced yesterday.

Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson said current assessments varied from state to state, in some cases leading to "the detriment of content and standards".

A spokesman for State Education Minister Lynne Kosky described the study as "a political stunt", and said the VCE was a nationally recognised and accredited school certificate.
