The State Government has launched a seven-year shake-up of the education system in a bid to improve school curriculums, teaching quality, and student performance across the sector.

Education Minister Lynne Kosky has commissioned a series of leadership groups, academics and consultants to look at ways to revamp the education system until 2010, as part of a series of changes to be announced today.

The groups will examine key problem areas and recommend changes to be implemented in primary and high schools at the start of next year. These include improving curriculums and accountability, giving localised support to improve the performance of ``struggling" schools, and more professional development programs for teachers.

Ms Kosky said the reviews were designed to improve the performance of all schools. ``Students shouldn't miss out because of the way a school is organised," she said.

The way in which schools are funded will also be changed, with public school funding to be tied to student outcomes rather than teacher and enrolment numbers.
